A fraud that runs into many millions of rupees has taken place in the import of electric vehicles by expatriate workers under special permits, according to the National Audit Office.
Auditor general W.P.C. Wickremaratne recently handed over a report of findings into the fraud to parliament authorities.
Results of this forensic audit are to be placed before a newly-elected parliament.
As the audit was underway, the then ways and means committee led by Patali Champika Ranawaka recommended suspending the gazette notification that extended the permit process.
The committee had found that 119 electric cars worth nearly Rs. 1,200 million had been imported by abusing the permits.
As many as 75 of these vehicles had been imported by a single importer, according to lankadeepa.lk.
