UNP assistant leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has decided not to contest the upcoming general election.
His decision comes after his suggestions to contest either by allying with the SJB or under the ‘elephant’ symbol were turned down by the party hierarchy.
He has been stressing that he would not be part of an alliance with the corrupt in the ‘gas cylinder’.
Since he does not want to betray the party, Kariyawasam says he will refrain from contesting.
There have been rumours that he would contest Kurunegala from the SJB, with the district nomination list allotting him a place.
