A major crisis in the state health sector is unavoidable if nearly 300 medical specialists retire on a single day as per the new retirement age of 60 years, warns the Association of Medical Specialists.
In a press statement, its president Dr. Lakkumar Fernando says their retirement by December 31 this year will potentially cause a collapse of the entire health service, especially in the peripheral hospitals.
Furthermore, an exodus of doctors will compound the crisis, he says, as there is already a shortage of consultants in the state health sector.
