Ruling MP Madhura Withanage has called for the appointment of a select committee to inquire into matters relating to tax defaulting.
He wrote to speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeyewardena on January 25 that defaulters and the defaulted amounts should be identified and laws formulated to recover the lost income.
Withanage pointed to media claims that around 53 billion US dollars of tax money was being kept out of the country.
Further, exporters are reportedly keeping a considerable amount of export revenue in dollar form out of the country, he noted.
Tax consultants are being blamed for preparing false reports to encourage the defaulters, he also said.
