Police used water cannons and teargas to disperse a protest by the SJB in Colombo yesterday afternoon (20) to demand local government polls.
Gathering near Technical College Junction, its MPs and activists marched towards Fort, despite a court order prohibiting them from entering the vicinity of the finance ministry, presidential secretariat, president’s house and Galle Face promenade.
Police used roadblocks to prevent their progress amid the rain and then launched a water cannon and teargas attack.
SJB general secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara and Mujibur Rahman had an exchange of words with the police as they tried to go forward.
Despite the blockades, protestors marched to Fort, where opposition leader Sajith Premadasa joined them, and vowed to fight on fearlessly towards victory.
