A female agricultural research assistant was killed over a fertilizer dispute in Tangalle yesterday morning (27), police said.
Deepashika Lakruwani Wijedasa (28) was walking to the road with her mother-in-law to take a bus to work, when a man had repeatedly cut her throat with a knife around 150 away from her home at Weliara in Netolpitiya.
The assailant arrested by the police has been identified as J.P. Sarath, a SJB candidate for Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha.

A fisherman, he had demanded a letter from the agricultural officer several times in order for a friend of his, a hospital worker, to claim free fertilizer from the government.
He was subdued and arrested after much effort, police said.
