The Treasury is unable to fully fund the ‘Suwa Seriya’ ambulance service due the economic woes.
Its directors have decided to seek support from well-wishers to continue with the service provided through the hotline 1990.
Started with Indian assistance, it has been running since 2018 as a nonprofit semi-government agency.
An annual funding of Rs. 3.9 billion it received from the Treasury has been cut to Rs. 2.5 billion this year.
‘Suwa Seriya’ is finding it difficult to keep 297 ambulances ready on a 24-hour basis, as each ambulance’s maintenance costs Rs. five million per year.
Now, the directors have come up with a project ‘adopt an ambulance’ which aims to find the money it needs.
