The Justice Ministry has called for a re-assessment of the cost estimate for further excavations at the Kokkutuduvai mass grave in Mullaitivu.
This came to light when a related case was taken up by the magistrate’s court in Mullaitivu yesterday (04).
JMO Kanagasabapathy Vasudeva has estimated that Rs. 13 million would be needed to complete the task.
At the hearing, the ministry’s request was intimated to the court by the district’s chief accountant.
With the delay in the approval of the funds, the excavations have been halted indefinitely.
So far, 40 human skeletal remains have been unearthed from the site.
Forensic archaeologist Prof. Raj Somadeva has determined that they belonged to LTTE members, who were involved in a firefight and then buried in a haphazard manner during the mid-1990s.
