The Election Commission has ruled out holding elections for Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha for now, claiming the winner can gain a wave of support.
It has told so to a delegation led by the leader of the Freedom People's Congres, Dullas Alahapperuma, at a meeting on 03 July.
When Alahapperuma noted the winner of the presidential polls too could gain a similar wave of support at the subsequent polls, the commission had no answer to give.
The four-year term of the Elpitiya PS ended on 11 October 2023 and the local government minister extended its term by one year.
The commission is empowered to announce elections for a local government body six months before the expiration of its term.
Accordingly, it should have called an election for the Elpitiya PS after 11 April.
