The National Movement for a Just Society (NMJS) urges all to ensure a presidential poll free of corruption, violence and hatred among communities and religions.
In a statement, NMJS president Karu Jayasuriya reminds the Election Commission, president, government, police and the entire state service of their special responsibility in this regard.
It is the duty of the incumbent and all candidates to prevent a return of the period in which society’s aspirations for a civilized election culture were lost due to unlimited powers gained by the executive through the 18 and 20 amendments to the constitution.
A proper implementation of the election expenditure act will help realise people’s hope for a free and fair election, he adds.
Also, the media has the duty of not becoming a tool of dismal propaganda seen during the previous presidential polls, Jayasuriya’s statement adds.
