The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has deferred announcing its presidential candidate, a senior party spokesman said.
Its politburo had decided to name the candidate today (01).
Now, the announcement is due next week, after further consultations within the party.
Mahindananda’s challenge
Meanwhile, MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage criticized the party for having decided to field an own candidate contrary to majority opinion.
Only incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe is capable of reviving the country, he said, adding that 80 pc of MPs and 90 pc of PC members of the SLPP are supporting him.
He dared the party to do politics without them in Kandy if possible, saying the people too are with them.
