Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Samagi Jana Sandhanaya General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara yesterday (27) affirmed that the SJB is ready to engage in any form of discussion with the IMF at any time.

He stated that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had expressed his readiness to engage in a video discussion with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding the agreements and related matters that have been reached.

This statement was made during the United National Party (UNP) conference.

Madduma Bandara further mentioned that the President indicated that all relevant parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, would be able to participate and present their views during this discussion.

In a statement released by the SJB, Madduma Bandara emphasized that the SJB was the first to call for discussions with the IMF to address the country’s economic crisis.

This call was made as early as August 2020.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa had also advocated for deep engagement with the IMF to secure support for the country, even before the government acknowledged the nation’s economic insolvency.

Whenever IMF representatives visited Sri Lanka, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and the SJB’s Economic Policy Committee consistently engaged in discussions with them.

The SJB had always presented proposals to amend conditions that would adversely affect the public.

Madduma Bandara also criticised President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s approach, stating that the IMF’s recommendations and conditions, as implemented by the President, are not reflective of the IMF’s true intentions.
