The attorney general has recommended the submission of a committee report with regard to Sri Lanka’s participation in the 2022 cricket World cup in Australia for a forensic audit.

The report by a five-member committee headed by retired judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena inquired into misdeeds alleged to have taken place during the tour.

The 63-page report has found sufficient reasons to dissolve Sri Lanka Cricket and recommends the Sports Ministry to either suspend, invalidate or reorganize its connection with SLC as per sports laws and regulations.

It has noted with concern the expenditure of more than Rs. 65 million to send 16 SLC officials with the team to Australia despite a ministry advice to curtail spending.

The Court of Appeal is presently taking up a petition filed by SLC president Shammi Silva and secretary Mohan de Silva who seek an order to prevent an invalidation of SLC’s registration on the basis of the report.

Newspaper advertisement to choose selectors

Meanwhile, members to the cricket selection committee are to be chosen through newspaper advertisement in a transparent manner.

A SLC request to appoint a selection committee headed by incumbent chief selector Pramodya Wickremasinghe has been rejected.

Wickremasinghe has told the media that they would continue functioning until an official intimation was made.
