The Sri Lanka men’s team has gained three places in world football rankings despite playing no international fixture for more than a year now.

According to FIFA, Sri Lanka occupies the 204th position, improving from its lowest ever 207th place a year ago.

Sri Lanka has been banned from international games since 21 January 2023 over political interferences in its football governing body.

They last played another country on 14 June 2022, against Maldives in an Asia Cup qualifier, where they lost 1-0.

Commenting on this, former FFSL president Jaswar Umar has told ‘Lankadeepa’ that Sri Lanka has gained bonus points for its participation in international games last year.

In the meantime, several countries ranked above Sri Lanka have had a minimum of bonus points after losing their games.

As a result, they had ranked below Sri Lanka, giving us the advantage to advance in the rankings, he said.

Argentina tops the world rankings, while Japan leads in Asia, where Sri Lanka are placed last, at 46th position.
