Football’s world governing body FIFA and the Asian Football Council have approved and included Sri Lanka in the official World Cup draw on a strict conditional basis.
Sri Lanka's first qualifier is on 12 October, and Football Sri Lanka (FSL) will need to conduct its election of office bearers at least 10 days before that.
Or else, Sri Lanka will not be allowed to participate in the qualifiers.
This comes in the wake of the sports minister appointing a three-member committee to call and hold FSL elections.
Former Football Sri Lanka president Jaswar Omar said, “The official update has been sent to the last elected President and its committee. The World Cup qualification match will be played on the 12th and 17th of October 2023.”
“FFSL needs to conduct its election at least 10 days before this World Cup match; otherwise, FIFA will not allow Sri Lanka to play in the qualifiers,” he said.
