Thilak Waragoda resigned as general secretary of the New Lanka Freedom Party (NLFP) in his own free will, said the party’s patron Chandrika Kumaratunga.
She responded to a news article published yesterday (21) in ‘The Leader’ under the heading “Welgama’s party replaces its general secretary after tense meeting.”
At its central committee meeting on March 20, the NLFP appointed Peshala Jayaratne, a former chief minister of the north central province, as its new general secretary.
That was on a proposal by party chairman Kumar Welgama.
